Episode 3: Enabling the Energy Transition: Strategies for RE Integration

EGAT Series - Episode 3

Title: Enabling the Energy Transition: Strategies for RE Integration
Episode: 3

Moderator: Dr. Daniel Liang, Head of Energy Storage System Advisory Services, UL

Speakers:

  • Mr. Chatchai Mawong, Director, Hydro & Renewable Energy Power Plant Development Division, EGAT
  • Mr. Bundit Sapianchai, President and CEO, BCPG Public Company Limited
  • Dr. Peerapat Vithayasrichareon, Lead Analyst, Renewable Integration and Secure Electricity Unit, International Energy Agency (IEA)
  • Mr. Henry Tay, Assistant Regional Director, Envision Digital International (Singapore)

Overview: EGAT’s commitment to renewable energy, guided by the PDP, was underlined at the beginning of 2020 by the awarding of a contract for the world’s largest hydro-floating solar hybrid project and one of the largest floating PV systems globally. Developing RE projects with the capacity to achieve government targets is one thing, integrating variable RE into existing grid systems is a significant hurdle to overcome, requiring resilient and flexible power systems.

Following a presentation outlining EGAT’s renewable energy and smart integration strategies, an expert panel will discuss some of the lessons learned after managing the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis on energy systems both regional and globally. The technical and economic challenges of large-scale RE integration will be examined highlighting the investments needed in infrastructure and technology to accelerate and enhance the integration of renewables into the power system, creating more flexible generation assets and a more resilient grid. Technologies from Energy Management Systems and Artificial intelligence to energy storage system (ESS) e.g. BESS, Hydro-pumped, etc. and smart grid and microgrid technologies all play a role in creating a power system that can better cope with variable RE integration.
