Company overview

The Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (DIME) at the University of Genoa hosts the Thermochemical Power Group (TPG), established in 1998.

TPG conducts research on advanced energy systems. Since 2004, it has hosted the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre on Fuel Cell Systems, focusing on stationary fuel cell power generation. In 2017, DIME also launched the HI-SEA joint lab with Fincantieri, dedicated to clean energy storage and marine propulsion.

TPG’s main research areas include sustainable energy technologies, dynamic modelling, thermoeconomic analysis, diagnostics, high-temperature fuel cells (SOFC), hydrogen systems (PEM), energy harvesting (Tesla turbines), combustion systems, and CO₂ separation. It has developed key software tools like WECoMP, WTEMP, and TRANSEO for energy system design and analysis.

With over 20 years of experience, TPG has participated in 40+ EU-funded projects and leads international cooperation through an UNESCO UNITWIN Initiative on clean energy. TPG supports the design of the TES system, focusing on state-of-charge monitoring and exploring further use cases, such as power-to-heat applications.
