AFTERBIOCHEM
Non-food biomass feedstocks open up new possibilities for biorefining processes, with high revenue potential for the sector. By combining anaerobic batch fermentation and esterification, the EU-funded AFTERBIOCHEM project aims to establish multiple new value chains for a variety of end products from non-food biomass feedstocks . During the fermentation process, solid mixtures of natural microorganisms will generate organic acids with a side stream of mineral fertilizers allowing the production of derivatives such as vinyl acetate monomer and cellulose acetate. By-products of sugar production can be used as feedstock in the fermentation process. The result will be renewable and organic alternatives to petrochemicals, potentially usable for fragrances and flavors, food and feed, as well as pharmaceuticals and personal care. The esterification process will help maximize product value and reduce waste and energy consumption.
