ANIONE

About: The overall objective of the EU-funded ANIONE project is to develop a high-performance, cost-effective and durable anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis technology. The system will combine the advantages of both proton exchange membrane and liquid electrolyte alkaline technologies, allowing the scaleable production of low-cost hydrogen from renewable sources. The polymer membranes, comprising a perfluorinated backbone and pendant chains, will achieve conductivity and stability comparable to their proton counterparts, while novel nanofibre reinforcements will ensure mechanical stability and reduced gas crossover. The project will ultimately validate a 2-kilowatt AEM electrolyser, producing hydrogen at a rate of about 0.4 Nm3/h. Green hydrogen produced from renewable sources is one of the pillars for achieving net-zero CO2 emissions in the EU by 2050.

Duration: 1 January 2020 - 30 September 2023

Partners: Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche (CNR-ITAE); Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique CNRS (CNRS); HydroLite; TFP Hydrogen (TFP H); IRD Fuel Cells A/S (IRD); Hydrogenics Europe NV (Hydrogrenics) and Uniresearch BV (UNR)
