ENLIGHTEM
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are currently the most energy-efficient lighting technology available. The use of smart lighting – LEDs with embedded sensors that are connected to a network and can be monitored and controlled from a centralised system – is on the rise, with the potential to become an enabling infrastructure for Internet of Things technologies. Visible light communication (VLC), an example of a communications medium for ubiquitous computing, is still in its infancy. Funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the ENLIGHTEM project plans to design advanced lighting solutions that leverage the Internet of Things and the low baseline energy consumption of LEDs. Fifteen early-stage researchers will receive training on how to integrate low-energy VLC with the Internet of Things.
