ESiM
About: The EU-funded ESiM project will investigate new enrgy storage approaches to overcome the disadvantages of flow batteries, such as the need to use corrosive or toxic substances. ESiM will experiment with new methods and materials to store energy in organic molecules, in particular in their intramolecular degrees of freedom (rotations and conformational changes). The project combines theory and simulation, molecular design and synthesis, scanning probe microscopy, solid-state physics and nanotechnology. As a proof of principle of the idea, researchers will produce a device based on a bimetallic cantilever to store and release energy from the active molecules. A successful proof of principle could offer an environmentally friendly, recyclable method of producing, storing and using energy.
