FlashPhos

White phosphorus is a strategic raw material for the food and pharmaceutical industries. While there are enough phosphorus reserves in Europe’s sewage sludge to cover the EU’s whole demand for white phosphorus, currently the EU largely depends on imports. The EU-funded FlashPhos project will recover high-quality white phosphorus at large scale using sewage sludge as input material. FlashPhos will break new ground by evaporating or melting the waste components, which are then separated to produce white phosphorus and other valuable raw materials without waste to dispose of. Accompanying the technical demonstration, the project will show the role of the innovative FlashPhos process in European industry from an ecological and socio-economical perspective.
