FlyBal
The wood of balsa, a tropical tree found in Ecuadorian Amazonia, is used in the manufacture of various industry components like aircraft wings. But demand for this timber keeps growing, particularly from the green energy sector, which uses balsa as the core material in the manufacture of wind turbine blades. The illegal balsa trade is indirectly responsible for parts of illegal deforestation in the Amazon. The EU-funded FlyBal project will investigate the other side of the green energy commodity chain and balsa extraction processes and their impact on the lives of those who reside there. Its findings will shed light on the positive and negative effects of green energy on balsa.
