HiHELIOS
HiHELIOS aims to deliver a TRL 7 modular, scalable, and circular Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) that combines high-power storage from LFP batteries or supercapacitors with high-energy storage from second-life NMC batteries. Building on the SEABAT project, it adapts flexible HESS architecture for grid applications and EV charging, using off-the-shelf and repurposed EV modules supported by digital modelling. Demonstrated in four real-life use cases—microgrids, renewable integration in weak grids, EV and e-boat fast-charging, and ancillary services—the system integrates an advanced BMS and data-driven PMS, EMS, and cloud platform. With demonstrators remaining in use post-project, HiHELIOS will develop a roadmap to TRL 9, contribute to EU standardization, and target by 2030 long-duration storage (>12h) at <€0.05/kWh/cycle with >5,000 cycles. The consortium unites 12 partners from six countries, including SMEs and widening-country participants.
