MERIDIONAL
Wind turbines are breaking new ground – or air, to be exact. Today’s airborne wind energy devices span altitudes above the well-studied surface layer. Unfortunately, our understanding of how inflow conditions impact loads and performance at these altitudes is limited. The EU-funded MERIDIONAL project will enable the efficient and accurate assessment of the performance and loads experienced by onshore, offshore, and airborne wind energy systems. Specifically, the project will design a toolchain based on an open-source platform. To capture the conditions within and above the atmospheric boundary layer, inflow conditions will be analysed and modelled beyond the surface layer. This is the first step to a full understanding of the loads and performance of wind farms and airborne wind energy devices.
