Artificial Intelligence Experimentation Facility For the Energy seCTor

AI-EFFECT (Artificial Intelligence Experimentation Facility For the Energy seCTor) is a pioneering European initiative aimed at accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence into the energy sector. Launched by EPRI Europe and supported by 19 partner organizations across 10 countries, the project is designed to establish a robust framework for testing, validating, and deploying AI technologies that enhance energy system performance, resilience, and sustainability. 

AI-EFFECT seeks to create a European Testing and Experimentation Facility (TEF) tailored specifically for energy applications. This facility will virtually connect existing labs and computing infrastructures across Europe through a secure digital platform. By doing so, it enables collaborative development and rigorous testing of AI models in real-world energy scenarios, while ensuring compliance with European data-sharing regulations. 

The project will demonstrate AI use cases in four countries—Denmark, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Germany—focusing on key challenges such as multi-energy system optimization, congestion management, energy efficiency, and distributed energy resource (DER) integration. These demonstrations will serve as blueprints for scalable AI adoption across Europe’s energy landscape. 

AI-EFFECT’s decentralized architecture aligns with the EU Energy Data Spaces framework, promoting secure data exchange and interoperability among utilities, researchers, and regulators. The platform will support a wide range of AI applications, including demand forecasting, anomaly detection, simulation, and automated reporting, helping utilities make smarter, faster decisions.
