Overcoming Europe’s system challenges with energy storage
Pamela Largue speaks to Patrick Clerens of EASE about how many GWh of energy storage Europe needs to meet decarbonisation targets.
In an exclusive interview at Enlit Europe 2022, Pamela Largue speaks to Patrick Clerens of EASE about how many GWh of energy storage Europe needs to meet decarbonisation targets.
Clerens elaborates on the huge system challenge facing Europe, as energy is decarbonising and we aim to triple the renewable base installed.
He explains the need to balance these goals with new storage, new interconnections and new system integration.
"Do we have enough projects in the pipeline, yes we do, is it fast enough, no it is not."
In order to meet the goal of 200GW of storage by 2030, however, Clerens insists we need to facilitate the rollout of storage faster and in a more uniform fashion in Europe. Furthermore, all storage technologies will be critically important, including long duration storage. It is therefore important to develop the market design to accommodate these solutions.
