Core module instaled at China's Linglong One modular reactor

The core module of the Linglong One reactor, a small modular reactor based in Hainan, China, has been successfully instaled, according to the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

The core module, also known as 'the heart of Linglong One', is one of the nuclear island's core components.

The module integrates the pressure vessel, evaporator, and primary pump receiver, which were instaled in one step according to the CNNC statement.

Before the lifting, the steam generator had undergone joint welding with the reactor pressure vessel at the factory.

According to CNNC, the design and construction of Linglong One are pioneering due to the modular construction and standardized design. This leads to shortened construction times and reduced costs.

The modular design also allows for flexible adjustments and construction according to users' requirements.

The Hainan Nuclear Power Multi-purpose Modular Small Reactor Technology Demonstration Project in China is touted as the world's first commercial land-based small modular pressurized water reactor.

When completed it will generate one billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which could meet the needs of 526,000 households.
