EDP Renewables has connected the Boccadoro utility-scale solar project, located in Serracapriola, Italy, to the grid.

It's EDP's first utility-scale solar photovoltaic project in Italy to be connected to the national grid.

The 10MWp Boccadoro project comprises 18,000 bifacial panels, which will produce 17,5GWh of clean energy annually supplying over 6,000 local homes in the region of Puglia.

Roberto Pasqua, executive director South & East Europe at EDP Renewables commented on the announcement:

"Projects like Boccadoro accelerate energy independence and strengthen the Italian energy system. Deploying EDP's first utility-scale photovoltaic plant in Italy is a milestone and a demonstration of our commitment to Italy's PNIEC goals of achieving up to 80GW of installed photovoltaic capacity by 2030”.

EDP, through EDP Renewables, has a capacity of almost 400MW in wind and solar projects under construction in Italy. The company sees Italy as a key part of its European expansion plan and is planning to invest further in utility-scale renewables, as well as in decentralised solar generation.

While Italy still relies heavily on coal and oil in its energy mix, more renewable energy projects are coming online with the share of renewables in overall energy use having increased to 19% by 2021.

Community renewables projects are also helping to decarbonise the energy system. The country has a 2026 target of 2,000MW generated from these projects.

Enlit Europe will take place in Milan, Italy, from 22-24 October 2024. Register and be inspired by Italy's energy transition.
