The HSbooster project is working to address the challenge of integrating clean energy technologies with tailored standardisation support.

Europe’s energy transition relies on the widespread deployment of clean and renewable technologies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Yet, the integration of these technologies often faces challenges, particularly the need for clear, widely adopted standards.

Standardisation ensures that innovations are reliable, interoperable and aligned with Europe’s energy goals.

For projects working on hydrogen systems, energy storage, smart grids and other sustainable solutions, understanding and engaging with the standardisation process is critical to ensuring their success and market adoption.

HSbooster standardisation support services

HSbooster.eu addresses this challenge by offering tailored standardisation support for EU-funded projects.

The initiative provides free consultancy services that help projects identify relevant standards, engage with standards development organisations and incorporate standardisation into their strategies. By doing so, HSbooster strengthens the link between innovation, policy goals and real-world energy deployment.

For the second year in a row, in October 2024 at Enlit Europe HSbooster highlighted its role in enabling EU-funded projects to contribute effectively to standardisation. HSbooster was present with a dedicated booth in the EU project zone and delivered a presentation about the offered opportunities.

Participants attending the event were therefore able to explore the Standards Orientation Tool, a service designed to help projects take their first steps towards understanding relevant standards and developing actionable strategies.

During the event, HSbooster also shared insights on how projects can maximise their impact through active participation in technical committees and working groups.

Impact on the energy transition

Through HSbooster’s support, energy-focused projects are already making significant contributions to European standardisation efforts, bridging the gap between research outputs and implementation.

The AFC4Hydro project, for example, advanced its hydropower technologies by contributing to the work of IEC TC4, the international committee responsible for hydraulic turbines. This engagement allowed the project to align its results with emerging global standards, improving the potential for adoption of its innovations across markets.

In sustainable construction, the HOUSEFUL project benefited from HSbooster’s guidance to connect with key players like the Catalonia Institute of Construction Technology. This collaboration has strengthened the project’s role in influencing standards for environmentally friendly housing solutions.

Projects working on hydrogen systems have also leveraged HSbooster’s support to engage with standardisation committees under CEN and CENELEC. These efforts address critical needs for consistency and interoperability across the entire hydrogen value chain, which is essential for scaling renewable energy integration and decarbonising Europe’s industrial sectors.

These examples show how projects, with expert support, can contribute to the development of standards that drive Europe’s energy transition forward. By fostering best practices and ensuring alignment with evolving regulatory frameworks, standardisation plays a vital role in delivering reliable, scalable, and sustainable solutions.

HSbooster.eu has developed a set of standardisation success stories in different domains that can be accessed here.

As Europe accelerates its adoption of renewable energy sources such as hydrogen, solar and wind, projects supported by HSbooster.eu are playing a critical role in ensuring that emerging solutions meet the highest technical and regulatory standards.

By bridging research outputs and the standardisation landscape, HSbooster.eu enables projects to make tangible contributions to the energy transition, while helping to meet key policy objectives like the European Green Deal.
