Japan's 2.3GW Goi Thermal Power Station starts operating

GE Vernova has announced that the third block of Goi Thermal Power Station in Chiba Prefecture| Japan| achieved the start of commercial operation.

GE Vernova has announced that the third block of Goi Thermal Power Station in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, achieved the start of commercial operation.

The power plant, owned by Japanese joint venture Goi United Generation (GIUG), was initially built in the 1960s and retired in 2018.

The plant now has a new lease of life due to the installation of advanced GE Vernova HA equipment and Toshiba's steam turbines and generators, which will enable an estimated 16% reduction in emissions.

Masataka Sato, CEO of Goi United Generation, explained that this milestone marks the completion of one of the largest LNG-fired power plants in Japan, which will deliver more than 2.3GW of stable and reliable power to the grid.

GE Vernova installed three 9HA.02 gas turbines at the Goi plant, as well as three Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs). The HRSGs use heat from the gas turbine exhaust to generate super-heated steam, which powers a steam turbine to create up to 50% more energy without any additional fuel.

According to GE Vernova, these HRSG Supermodules are currently the largest in the world, with each Supermodule weighing approximately 2,500 metric tonnes and measuring between 43 to 46m in height.

Ramesh Singaram, president and CEO of GE Vernova Gas Power Asia, commented in a statement: “We’re proud that equipment of that size and tailored to withstand earthquakes was delivered to the Goi site safely—where it can play a crucial role supplying electricity for Japanese homes and businesses.”

GE Vernova has been operating in Japan for the past 130 years, with its equipment currently providing about half of Japan’s gas power capacity.

The company is also working with other key players in the country to develop more efficient and advanced gas turbines and hydrogen combustion capable equipment, and technology for ammonia combustion in collaboration with IHI.
