Green hydrogen producer Lhyfe has teamed up with software company Atmen to set a new standard in carbon footprint traceability within the hydrogen and Power-to-X sectors.

Lhyfe is working to obtain its RFNBO certification and is therefore looking to maximise transparency through a precise traceability system.

Atmen's automation software will allow Lhyfe's green hydrogen to be accompanied by a digital product passport, which will provide a complete and precise description of the carbon footprint of the hydrogen produced.

The passport includes the following detailed information:

  • Energy sourcing: where, when, and how the electricity used in the production process was generated,
  • Embedded emissions: step-by-step breakdown of the carbon intensity calculations,
  • Supply chain contribution: the impact of each processing and logistics stage on the hydrogen's carbon footprint.

This collaboration starts with the production unit in Bouin in France and will be extended to other Lhyfe sites.

Once the RFNBO certification for hydrogen produced at its various sites is achieved, the digital passports will include the “RFNBO-compliant” label.

According to Lhyfe, this level of traceability and compliance will help them meet their clients’ emission and decarbonisation targets with unprecedented detail.

Flore de Durfort, CEO of Atmen, said that Atmen is thrilled to partner with Lhyfe, describing the company as one of the most innovative and fastest-growing hydrogen producers in Europe.

Said de Dufort: "Together, we are setting a new standard in traceability, enabling the hydrogen sector to meet the strictest sustainability requirements with precision and transparency.”

Antoine Hamon, chief operations officer at Lhyfe, called the collaboration with Atmen "a major step" in realising their commitment to transparency for our clients, both in terms of sustainability and traceability.

"With Digital Product Passports, we are enhancing trust in the sustainability of our hydrogen. We invite the sector to align with this practice, which will help develop the industry with the same spirit of trust.”

The RFNBO certification confirms that hydrogen is produced sustainably (via water electrolysis) and from 100% renewable electricity. It includes a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment of this production process.

The certification ensures compliance with the strict criteria defined by the European Union and adherence to the highest environmental standards, thereby strengthening trust among partners, clients, and investors.
