Mitsubishi Power has received two orders in cooperation with Doosan Enerbility to supply six M501JAC gas turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment for the Rumah 1 and Al-Nairyah 1 power plants in Saudi Arabia.

The Rumah 1 and Al-Nairyah 1 power plants will have a combined capacity of 3.6GW, amounting to nearly 2.5% of the national grid's capacity.

The Rumah 1 power plant is located about 80km east of Riyadh and Nairyah 1 is located approximately 50 kilometers north of Al Nairyah, Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

The plants will be developed by a consortium comprising the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), ACWA Power Company, and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

The M501JAC turbines will be assembled locally at Mitsubishi Power Saudi Arabia's Dammam factory. The hydrogen-ready turbines will aid the plants in delivering efficient, flexible and continuous power, while lowering emissions of the region's energy mix.

Khalid Salem, president of Middle East & North Africa, Mitsubishi Power commented: "We are proud to partner with SEC, ACWA Power, KEPCO, and Doosan Enerbility on this landmark project...As the Kingdom continues its ambitious journey towards increasing the share of renewable energy in its grid, the Rumah-1 and Al-Nairyah-1 plants will serve as cornerstones in ensuring grid stability and reliable power generation."

These projects are part of the energy mix plan being delivered under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy. The energy mix plan aims to meet the future load demand of the electrical system, to ensure the reliability and security of the energy supply and localise gas turbine manufacturing. Furthermore, the plan aims to integrate renewable energy and natural gas to each account for 50% of the Kingdom's electricity generation by 2030.

In addition to the Rumah 1 and Al-Nairyah 1 power plants, Rumah 2 and Al-Nairyah 2 will also be developed under the energy mix plan.

A consortium comprising Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA), JERA, and Al-Bawani, secured the contracts for the Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 power plants.

The Saudi Power Procurement Company SPPC will enter into a 25-year power purchase agreement with each project company, on a build, own, and operate basis, with investments of amounting to SAR30 billion ($8 billion).

Mitsubishi Power has been operating in Saudi Arabia for over fifty years, beginning operations with its first supply of boilers to Aramco in Abqaiq in the 1960s.
