Rolls-Royce, ASCO Carbon Dioxide and Landmark Power Holdings have signed an MoU to develop scalable solutions for clean power generation with carbon capture from mtu gas reciprocating engines.

The new solution, the first example of which is currently under construction in the village of Rhodesia in Nottinghamshire in central England, is aimed at supporting power generation customers to meet their net-zero ambitions.

Specifically, it is based on Rolls-Royce’s mtu gas combustion engines with the integration of Landmark Power Holdings’ FLEXPOWER PLUS flexible power generation technology and ASCO’s carbon capture technology.

With that, the plan is to make the captured CO2 available for use in industries such as food production, efuels, sustainable aviation fuel and/or cement and plastic production, or alternatively for permanent storage if the preferred option.

“Power generation is a highly attractive, growing market segment and an area of strategic focus for Rolls-Royce, where partnerships can help further grow market position and broaden its power generation offering, as set out at last November’s Capital Markets Day,” comments Tobias Ostermaier, President Stationary Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

The Rhodesia project is a 10MW system, which will feed power into the national grid to provide security for the area’s consumers as well as be sold through a private wire power supply for local businesses with the intent to facilitate electric vehicle charging stations.

Construction of the plant, which also involves the specialist investment company Victory Hill, started in March 2022 and the start of power production is projected for Q3 2024 with the full CO2 capture from Q4 2024.

Mick Avison, founder and managing director of Landmark Power Holdings, says the partnership between the three companies “is an important milestone in our collective mission to combat climate change and promote clean energy practices.”

Ralph Spring, CEO of ASCO Carbon Dioxide, also adds wanting to serve hard-to-abate industries with a cost-effective solution.

“This cooperation is a huge step into the right direction.”
