TAQA and JERA reach financial close on 475MW Saudi cogen plant
Saudi's TAQA and Japan's JERA have reached financial close on a new industrial cogeneration plant in Jubail| Saudi Arabia.

Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and Japanese power company JERA have reached financial close on a new industrial cogeneration plant in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
The cogeneration plant will be developed through a special purpose entity, Najim Cogeneration Company Limited, created by JERA and TAQA on a 25-year build, own, and operate basis.
The plant will produce 475MW of electricity and approximately 452 tonnes per hour (TPH) of steam, which will be supplied to Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATROP) after TAQA and JERA concluded a power and steam purchase agreement.

The cogeneration plant will be based on J-class gas turbine technology to optimise energy efficiency and reduce emissions. It will also be built for the future installation of a carbon capture plant and is capable of hydrogen co-firing.

Farid Al Awlaqi, chief executive officer, TAQA’s Generation business, added: “...TAQA is proud to take on a developer role as well as the operations and maintenance at the plant, two focus areas for capability expansion for TAQA, as well as adding 475MW of power generation and 452TPH of steam generation to our overall capacity.

The Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company is an advanced refinery with a processing capacity of 460,000 barrels per day of Arabian Heavy Crude. It was founded by oil majors Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies and is located at Jubail Industrial City in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
