In this episode of the EU Energy Projects Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Susanne Nies, Project Lead at Helmholtz Centre and one of the most insightful voices in European energy policy.

Our conversation centred on a question I often return to: how exactly is the European Commission shaping the path toward climate neutrality, and what challenges and opportunities lie ahead?

Susanne took us on a journey through the evolution of EU energy policy, reminding me that it started with market liberalisation and environmental concerns, but has grown into something much bigger. The European Green Deal, she explained, is truly a turning point.

An overarching framework that places climate action at the heart of Europe’s strategy. What struck me most is how this vision was championed by leaders not traditionally linked to the green agenda, proving how broad the political commitment to climate neutrality has become.

When I asked Susanne to grade the Commission’s leadership since the Green Deal, she gave it an “8 out of 10”. A high mark, but one tempered by realism. She acknowledged the immense pressures of today’s world: war on Europe’s doorstep, economic stagnation and rising social costs. These factors, she warned, risk pushing the energy transition to the political backburner.

I also appreciated her candour about contradictions, such as Europe’s continued reliance on fossil fuel imports. It’s a reminder that even strong frameworks like the Green Deal must constantly be defended and adapted.

Yet, our discussion wasn’t without hope. I was encouraged to hear that utilities such as Enel, E.ON and EDP are embracing the certainty provided by EU targets and are pushing ahead with renewables and grid development. Their alignment with the Commission strengthens the case for a resilient and sustainable energy system.

For me, this episode underscored both the fragility and the strength of Europe’s energy transition. While challenges remain, the Green Deal still provides a clear direction, and as Susanne reminded me, that compass is essential if we are to stay the course.
