Why the new EU Commission and US administration will not slow gas tech

For Bedar Islam of Johnson Matthey, no matter the new leadership on either side of the Atlantic, gas tech and its decarbonisation will have value.

For Bedar Islam, Global Business Manager of LCH, Hydrogen-to-Power at Johnson Matthey, no matter the new leadership on either side of the Atlantic, when it comes to gas and its decarbonisation, its business value will keep it in the running.

With Trump returning to office and the new European Commission taking office, the energy sector's next few years are poised to see some changes.

But for Islam, speaking during an exclusive interview during Enlit Europe - weeks prior to Trump’s win announcement - no matter the election results, support for climate actions will continue.

“I do not think its going to go anywhere,” said Islam, who operates out in Texas, US.

“The broader European community has been supporting, have been the vanguard and a leader in this kind of pursuit.

“So with new office taking place in the European Commission, I don’t think there will be upside down attitudes towards adopting better technology to address climate situations.”

According to Islam, when it comes to the US, gas tech decarbonisation will continue to be attractive as it will bring more jobs to the table.

“Even in the US – it’s a very large country and large economy; the oil and gas and energy sector is huge.

“So if you look at that context - the entire US is divided into blue and red - either way you look at it, most of the red states…are going to like blue hydrogen with CCS because it will actually create a lot of jobs.

“Either way you slice … actions such as CCS-based gas utilisation will actually create jobs so both sides will adopt these kinds of measures.

“In fact, I think CCS-based, blue hydrogen decarbonisation will create...a second industrial revolution.”

Watch the rest of the interview for insights on Texas' approach to renewables and gas and whethere the continued use of CCUS and blue and hydrogen will result in industry getting 'locked in' on fossil fuels.
