Smart meters are necessary as the grid is becoming much more dynamic and both utilities and consumers need the better information they provide, said Werner Lieberherr, CEO of Landis+Gyr.

Speaking in a Connect interview at Enlit Europe, Lieberherr highlighted the importance of accelerating the smart meter rollout in Europe and changing legislation to enable it.

He also commented on the importance of smart water metering and its potential for leak detection, particularly in countries such as Australia. As an example, he cites the Victoria utility South East Water as losing on average about one-sixth of its water.

Turning to the company’s newest product, the Revelo range of meters, Lieberherr commented on their role as a grid edge sensor including the ability to continuously monitor the sin curve for power quality and other anomalies.

“For a utility, it’s very important that they have much better information in this much more dynamic environment, but also for the end consumer who is able to monitor their power consumption on a mobile phone.”

He adds that managing the data also needs to be thought about and Landis+Gyr has a partnership with Google for cloud-based energy management.

“We want to use that to give utility customers and end consumers better information.”
