Amazon reaches 30 solar and wind projects in southeastern US

Amazon continues to expand its global renewable energy portfolio in its effort toward net-zero carbon

Community Energy developed the 100 MW Amazon Solar Farm in Virginia.

As Amazon continues to expand its global renewable energy portfolio in its effort toward net-zero carbon, it has reached 30 solar and wind projects in the southeastern US alone.

With its five new solar and wind projects, Amazon expects to generate more than 7,500GWh once fully operational. The new projects include a utility-scale wind farm in Mississippi and several solar farms in Arkansas and Georgia.

With stated plans to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, Amazon is the largest global purchaser of renewable energy. It’s also the largest purchaser in several states, such as Kentucky, Missouri, and Mississippi. The company procured 8.3GW of renewable energy in 2022 (a self-reported corporate record), in efforts to power its data centres, fulfilment centres, and physical stores.

Several of Amazon’s projects in the southeast have recently become operational, including the Turkey Creek Solar Ranch in Kentucky, the Bulldog Solar Farm and Sunny Solar Farm in Georgia, and a rooftop solar installation at the Amazon Air Hub at Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Amazon co-founded the Climate Pledge in 2019, in which its nearly 400 signatories have pledged to reach net-zero carbon by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Amazon originally forecast it would reach this goal by 2030, but has since reduced that to 2025.
