Ansaldo Energia has successfully completed the upgrade at Alpiq’s San Severo combined-cycle power plant, located in the province of Foggia, Italy.
The project involved the upgrade of the gas turbine, steam turbine, and generator, while also enhancing operational flexibility.
The plant is now also able to operate with up to 25% hydrogen.
The upgrade, states Ansaldo Energia in a release, has increased power output by 43MW, improved efficiency by 0.9% and reduced CO2 emissions by 10,000 tonnes per year.

“This project represents a fundamental step in ensuring the security and flexibility of Italy’s power system,” said Massimiliano Bignami, country manager Italy at Alpiq. “The upgrade strengthens the strategic role of the San Severo plant, already qualified in the capacity market, contributing to grid stability and the integration of renewable sources.”
The 400MW San Severo combined-cycle power plant started operating in February 2011. It not only provides electricity to nearly 1 million households, but also provides important grid stabilisation services.
Reto Furrer, executive vice president Thermal Service at Ansaldo Energia: “As the Original Equipment Manufacturer of the key components, Ansaldo Energia has provided its expertise and advanced technologies to ensure the plant is ready to meet the challenges of the energy transition and an ever-evolving power market.”
