The Chilean Government has given the green light to build a 260 MW solar plant at Copiapo, located in the Atacama region.

California-based SolarReserve, the developer behind the Copiapo Solar Project, said commercial operations are scheduled to begin in Chile in 2019.

Copiapo Solar Project

The $2 billion project will feature SolarReserve's concentrating solar power, or CSP, tower technology with molten salt thermal energy storage, combined with solar photovoltaic panels, a "hybrid concept" aimed at maximizing the facility's output.

It is expected to maximise the output of the facility, generating up to 1,800GWh of energy per year.
