Doosan Enerbility has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Siemens Gamesa and Equinor to develop the 750MW Ulsan Bandibuli floating offshore wind project.

The project is being developed off the coast of Ulsan, South Korea.

Siemens Gamesa will supply the 14MW large-size wind turbines and Doosan Enerbility will be assembling the nacelles at its Changwon wind turbine shop.

Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group, commented on the signing of the agreement: “The partnership between Doosan and Siemens Gamesa is recognized as being a most realistic and optimal cooperation model that will help expedite the expansion of the Korean domestic wind market.

“With the signing of this MOU, we will be able to further solidify the partnership between the three companies and by continuously engaging in collaborations, we expect to contribute to the promotion of Korea’s offshore wind power ecosystem.”

Equinor signed the agreement with Ulsan city in May 2019 for the development of the Bandibuli or Firefly wind farm, which will comprise two 75km2 areas 70km off the coast.

Equinor will deploy a low draft semi-submersible floating wind concept, the Wind Semi, which will be most suited to South Korea's offshore conditions. The mooring systems will also be designed for the water depth in the area outside Ulsan, as well as to survive typhoons.

In October this year, the transmission power facility usage contract was signed between Equinor and KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) for the Bandibuli project. The agreement was signed with a total of five floating offshore wind power projects currently underway in the waters off Ulsan which will connect a total of 6GW of clean power to KEPCO’s power grid.

Doosan Enerbility currently holds a product portfolio that includes 3.3MW, 5.5MW and 8MW wind turbine models.

In June 2022, Doosan signed its first MoU with Siemens Gamesa to pursue strategic collaboration in the Korean offshore wind market, followed by a framework agreement for strategic partnership in February 2023.
