The example of the microcosms of the Greek Islands for the energy transition

The energy transition in islands constitutes a major challenge. But apart from a challenge, it is also a necessity and an opportunity for sustainable social and economic development. And that development can only be achieved with the assistance and understanding of local people.

This is why local energy communities have an important role to play in the energy transition. Greece acknowledged this fact and that’s why it was one of the first EU member states to pass a law on Energy Communities in early 2018, enabling Energy Communities to invest in specific project categories.

Kythnos, Ikaria, Sifnos, Tilos, Agios Efstratios, Crete, and Chalk are all islands that have embraced the implementation of successful, local-scale innovation projects and/or initiatives, generating meaningful results across different energy aspects and contributing to positive social change.
