In this Energy Transitions podcast, Yuliana Onishchuk of Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation describes the positive impact of renewables on locals in Ukraine.

The impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been far-reaching, with critical infrastructure experiencing power outages rendering them unable to provide vital services for locals.

One NGO taking action to restore services while simultaneously developing renewable energy is the Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, a charity led by Yuliana Onishchuk that connects solar and energy storage systems to critical infrastructure such as hospitals and schools.

In this episode of the Energy Transitions podcast, Kelvin Ross, editor-in-chief for Enlit, spoke with Yuliana Onishchuk in front of a live audience at Enlit Europe in Milan. Onishchuk provided insight into the projects they are focusing on and the challenges they face in this volatile situation and shared her passion for making a positive difference to those impacted by the war.

In this episode you will learn more about:

  • How Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation is tracking to meet the 100 schools and 50 hospitals project target;
  • The impact of blackouts on the equipment and the importance of local procurement for projects;
  • How project partners are supporting the initiative;
  • The conditions in schools and bomb shelters making this initiative critical;
  • How Onishchuk and her team are working to educate people in Ukraine about the importance of renewables and are impacting the mindset of young Ukrainians concerning sustainability.

"Missile attacks are immense: during two hours there were three siren alarms, and when the sirens are on children have to stop their education and go into the bomb shelters."
