During the last edition of EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) Maria Laura Trifiletti and Edoardo Genova, both from Zabala, organised a very interesting session on electrifying the industry.
After listening to their interesting panel discussion during the event, I felt compelled to ask them a few questions on the subject. Hence this podcast episode.
Their message is unmistakable: if Europe is serious about reaching climate neutrality, electrifying the industrial sector isn't just one strategy, it’s the cornerstone.
As Edoardo put it during our conversation, we’re at a “strategic and ontological crossroads". On one hand, we must drive forward with decarbonisation under the European Green Deal and the newer Clean Industrial Deal. On the other, Europe must fiercely protect its industrial competitiveness. Balancing these two goals is the challenge – and electrification is central to making it possible.
Maria Laura highlighted how electrification, powered by renewables, offers dual benefits: slashing carbon emissions and boosting energy efficiency. “It’s not just about replacing fossil fuels,” she emphasised. “It’s about future-proofing our industries.” That means looking beyond mere substitution and considering how smarter grid infrastructure, innovation and demand flexibility can work together.
These were precisely the themes tackled during their session at EUSEW 2025 (EU Sustainable Energy Week), where they brought together key stakeholders – from industry leaders to European Commission representatives – for an engaging discussion on unlocking flexibility and innovation for a decarbonised industrial future. The session served as a platform to share concrete insights into the role electrification can play in reshaping Europe’s industrial processes.
Edoardo was quick to build on these ideas, explaining how flexibility mechanisms are key to helping industries align with the variability of renewables. "We can’t let solar and wind fluctuations become a barrier. Instead, we need to turn them into economic opportunities," he said. Demand side response tools, microgrids and even direct current technologies all help manage this variability without sacrificing production or competitiveness.
One of the more exciting areas discussed was long-duration energy storage. Edoardo passionately described how thermal, chemical, and mechanical storage solutions – beyond just batteries – could bridge the gaps between production and consumption, allowing industries to operate smoothly even when renewables aren't generating.
The conversation left me thinking that electrification is more than a technical shift, it’s a reimagining of how energy and industry coexist.
