Europe’s metering push drives KAIFA expansion into water and gas sectors

In discussion with Shenzhen KAIFA’s Carlos Gustavo Rydin, Business Development Director, and Henry Chan, Sales VP, the company highlights its role in supporting the digital transformation of water and gas metering, as well as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), driven by EU recovery funds and national mandates.

Rydin and Chan highlight strong momentum in markets such as Spain and Portugal, where utilities are increasingly required to digitalise operations, with smart meters playing a key role in enabling this transition.

Smart water and gas demand accelerates across Iberia

For example in Spain, many projects in the water sector concerning digitalisation are underway, many supported by European Union COVID recovery funds. These initiatives are generating significant demand for smart metering solutions.

Additionally, there is a lot of movement in Spain's gas sector, with upcoming government mandates for the deployment of smart gas meters. This is expected to drive pilot projects and tenders, with many projects starting from 2026 onwards.

Certification and testing remain critical to market access

Certification and testing are described as essential prerequisites for market participation.

In Spain, laboratories such as ITE and TECNALIA play a central role in testing, approval and certification of meters, with compliance seen as mandatory before deployment. 

In Portugal, Labelec performs a similar function, providing extensive and ongoing testing across functional, communication and security requirements.

These certification processes are continuous, reflecting the evolving requirements of the sector, particularly around performance and cybersecurity.
