Marine energy, in its various forms, has shown a great deal of progress this year with many technologies advancing towards commercialisation and some even being connected to the grid.

Here are five stories that clearly demonstrate the sector's progress.

1 - Eco Wave Power’s Israeli project officially switched on

Eco Wave Power has announced that the Jaffa project in Israel was officially switched on and is now exporting electricity into the country’s power grid.

This is the first array of wave power generators to be connected to an electricity grid in Israel and in the Middle East and is operating under the terms of a power purchase agreement with the Israeli National Electric Company (IEC).

2 - CorPower Ocean raises $34m to commercialise its wave energy

CorPower Ocean announced the largest single investment in its wave energy technology after securing $34 million Series B1 funding.

The funding was led by NordicNinja VC – a Japanese-backed VC in Europe focusing on Deep Tech and Climate Tech, SEB Greentech the cleantech investment arm of the SEB bank, and European investor InnoEnergy.

3 - HydroWing advances plans for Indonesia’s first tidal energy plant

HydroWing has signed a binding agreement with one of Perusahaan Listrik Negara’s (PLN) Subholdings to develop plans for the first tidal current power plant in Indonesia.

The 10MW tidal energy project is planned to be located in East Nusa Tenggara in the Indonesian archipelago.

4 - Planning starts for ‘world’s largest tidal scheme’

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has voted to begin the planning for a 700MW tidal barrage scheme across the River Mersey, UK.

The scoping opinion will be submitted to the planning inspector later this year. According to Steve Rotheram, mayor of the Liverpool City Region, the multi-billion-pound River Mersey Tidal Power project has the potential to generate clean, predictable energy for 120 years and create thousands of jobs.

5 - Minesto verifies performance of Dragon 12 tidal plant

Swedish tidal energy developer Minesto confirmed that two weeks of testing verified the Dragon 12 functionality and power production performance are satisfactory and as projected.

All core operating functions, such as starting, turning with the tidal flow and electricity generation, have been verified in its first phase of operation. Given the stable system behavior, Minesto concludes the technology risks of scale-up have been significantly reduced.
