Masdar and PT PLN partner to develop floating solar in Indonesia
Masdar has signed two agreements with PT PLN (Persero) to advance the development of floating solar projects in Indonesia.

Masdar has signed two agreements with Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero) to advance the development of floating solar projects in Southeast Asia.
The first agreement will secure development of a floating solar power plant at the Jatigede Dam reservoir in West Java, with completion scheduled for 2027.
The second agreement will explore the potential expansion of Masdar’s 145MWac Cirata floating solar PV plant, which began operating in November 2023. The plant is now generating enough renewable energy to power 50,000 homes.
Following regulatory changes increasing the proportion of water coverage allowed for renewable energy usage, Masdar and PLN conducted studies into the feasibility of the expansion, which can now take place.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, chief executive officer of Masdar, said: "The Jatigede project will be a strong addition to our collaboration with PLN and its development...These agreements also demonstrate our continuing commitment to supporting Indonesia’s ambitious renewable energy objectives. We look forward to building on the already powerful partnership we enjoy with PLN to further explore developing renewable energy projects that drive sustainable growth in Indonesia."
Indonesia aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, with President Prabowo announcing plans to add over 75GW of renewable energy capacity in the next 15 years.
Darmawan Prasodjo, president Director of PT PLN (Persero), added: "PLN is fully committed to leading Indonesia’s energy transition. These collaborations are a testament to the shared global effort needed to address the climate crisis. By expanding our renewable energy capacity, we’re reducing fossil fuel dependence, enhancing energy sustainability, and strengthening energy sovereignty while driving economic growth."
Indonesia is an archipelago consisting of more than 17,000 islands and over 600 natural lakes and reservoirs, which offer ideal locations for the growth of floating solar power, according to Masdar.
The country is also considered a key strategic partner for the UAE, where Masdar has an expanding portfolio of interests. The firm opened an office in Jakarta in 2021 to further strengthen links with players within the region.
