Project WeForming: Revolutionising intelligent grid-forming buildings

WeForming is an EU-funded project that envisions a revolutionary approach to energy management, where buildings play a strategic and active role in supporting and shaping the energy networks of the future.

At the heart of project WeForming’s value proposition are Intelligent Grid-Forming Buildings (iGFBs), which are equipped with cutting-edge software and hardware technologies designed to optimise energy use by operating efficiently and interactively across multiple dimensions.

Buildings currently account for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. Recognising their critical role in achieving the EU’s ambitious environmental and energy efficiency targets, our mission is to establish iGFBs as integral elements in shaping a secure, resilient, and carbon-free energy ecosystem, placing them at the forefront of Europe’s decarbonisation journey.

To achieve this, the project is anchored in four pillars: building operational, interoperability assurance, new business models and smart-city enabling.

WeForming’s innovative methodology and digital solutions will be implemented and validated through six real-life demonstrators across Europe (Luxembourg, Portugal, Croatia, Belgium, Spain and Germany). These use cases will target different systems, building types, consumer needs, economic conditions and climates, showcasing the potential of iGFBs.

The impact of WeForming extends to all stakeholders involved in the energy transition. For building users, this means enhanced comfort, lower energy bills, and a significant reduction in carbon footprint. For stakeholders, including energy providers and policymakers, WeForming offers a blueprint for economic value, sustainable urban development, and a more resilient energy grid.
