Siemens Energy's Karim Amin has confirmed that the energy company has broken not one, but two, world records at SSE Thermal’s Keadby Unit 2 Power Station in North Lincolnshire, UK.

Amin stated in a LinkedIn post that the Guinness World Records organisation has officially confirmed the following two records:

  • Most efficient combined cycle power plant with 64.18% efficiency, verified in May 2024.
  • The most powerful combined cycle power plant, with 849.45MW powered by the Siemens Energy SGT5-9000HL 50Hz turbine

The SGT5-9000 HL turbine allows for rapid start-up and shut-down and enables flexible response to changing energy supply and market conditions. Furthermore, the HL turbine can already run on up to 50% hydrogen.

The original Keadby coal-fired station was authorised in 1947 and it was designed to have a total capacity of 360MW.

The gas-fired power station Keadby 1 was commissioned in January 1996.

Construction on Keadby 2 power station began in August 2018, with commercial operation beginning 15 March 2023.

This is not the first record for Siemens Energy, in 2022 Duke Energy's Lincoln Combustion Turbine Station, powered by the SGT6-9000HL (60Hz) turbine, was certified with the title for the "most powerful simple-cycle gas power plant" with an output of 410.9MW. The equipment that achieved the record was delivered to the Lincoln site in November 2019 and was started for the first time in April 2020.

In 1961, Siemens Energy's Obersendling combined heat and power plant in Munich was operating the VM 80. With an output of 23.4MW and an efficiency of 32%, it was the world’s highest-performance single-shaft gas turbine at the time.

In his Linkedin post, Amin stated that: "The energy transition needs gas turbines in the short and long term, and gas turbines need constant improvement and innovation. That is why the records we achieved with SSE Thermal at the Keadby 2 Power Station in the UK are so valuable."
