Ontario-based utility Bruce Power has signed an agreement with Siemens Energy Canada for new high-pressure steam turbines for its Bruce A nuclear units.

Bruce A consists of four nuclear units, including two Candu-791 reactors and two Candu-750 reactors.

The new Siemens Energy turbines are expected to increase output by more than 30MW per unit, delivering approximately 125MW of additional power to Ontario’s grid.

“Upgrading a power plant is the fastest way to get more energy onto the grid,” said Arne Wohlschlegel, Managing Director of Siemens Energy Canada.

Wohlschlegel added that when the upgrade is complete, the life of the plant will be extended for another 30 years.

The turbine replacements, expected to be completed between 2028 and 2031, are part of Bruce Power’s Project 2030 and Life-Extension asset management projects.

According to Bruce Power, its Project 2030 is the lowest cost option for adding new generation capacity to the grid, capitalising on replacements and upgrades to get the most out of existing assets.

More specifically, the company is investing in a series of “incremental power recovery projects” to increase annual power output up to 7GW through the 2030s.

“Bruce Power’s project work is enhancing the safety, efficiency and reliability of our existing units and providing more clean energy for the people, homes, businesses and hospitals in Ontario,” said David Furr, Vice-President of Supply Chain at Bruce Power.

The Bruce Nuclear Generating Station is one of three nuclear facilities in the province, providing about one-third of Ontario's electricity. Bruce consists of two generating stations (Bruce A and Bruce B) with a total of eight nuclear units.

After being refurbished, Bruce A, Units 1 and 2 were restarted in 2012, which provided an additional 1,500MW of capacity.

Further refurbishments are now underway or being planned for the remaining units in Bruce A and for the units in Bruce B.
