Siemens Energy wins turbine contract for 1200MW plant in Taiwan

The new natural gas power plant will allow older| carbon-intensive plants to be taken off the grid| thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Siemens Energy has signed a contract to supply two gas turbines for the Kuo Kuang 2 combined-cycle power plant in Taiwan.

Kuo Kuang 2 is being built together with EPC contractor CTCI Corporation and will have a 1,200MW capacity once commissioned.

The scope of supply will see Siemens Energy provide a complete power island solution including two SGT6-9000HL gas turbines, one SST6-5000 steam turbine, three SGEN6-2000P generators and the Omnivise T3000 control system.

Siemens Energy originally partnered with Kuo Kuang Power Co. Ltd. for the operation and maintenance of Kuo Kuang gas-fired power plant unit 1, which was commissioned in 2003.

Karim Amin, member of the Siemens Energy Executive Board and responsible for the Gas Services Business Area, commented in a statement: “The Kuo Kuang 2 project is a continuation of our success story in Kuo Kuang 1 and a testament to the trust that customers place in our products and services. Our cutting-edge HL gas turbines will enhance the power generation efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. This technology, when paired with renewable energies, enables rapid power plant start-up, ensuring a reliable energy supply for Taiwan."

Taiwan is looking to reduce its reliance on coal, while simultaneously preparing for increased power demand associated with growing industrial and technology sectors.

According to Siemens Energy, Taiwan's electricity demand is expected to rise by 12-13% by 2030, driven largely by AI, as well as the country's growing semiconductor and microchip industries.
