Spain's battery manufacturing advantage on the road to net zero

How well-placed is Spain in Europe’s battery value chain and what can we expect from its EV-to-power-grid market?

Spain has a strong automotive sector, a strong manufacturing tradition, and is no stranger to announcements of EV battery gigafactories. So how well-placed is the country in Europe’s battery value chain and what can we expect from its EV-to-power-grid market?

These are some of the key discussion points in this fourth and final episode of the special edition Energy Transitions podcast series, which looks into the decarbonisation of Spain’s transport sector.

In this episode, Francisco Carranza, Partner of Futuraiser and ex-CEO of Basquevolt, discusses Spain's market and supply chain potential for the EV battery – arguably the most important part of the e-mobility mechanism, acting as the nexus point between the automotive and energy elements.

For Carranza, who will be chairing a session at this year's Enlit Europe in Bilbao, Spain, the potential is quite significant: “I’m personally convinced Spain will retain one of the top spots in manufacturing that [battery] capacity.”

Tune into the episode to hear more about:

  • How the collaboration between the automotive and energy sectors has been proceeding?
  • Why Spain could be a strategic location for gigafactories
  • The unpredictable future of the battery manufacturing landscape
  • The impact of V2G on battery life
  • What Spain’s regulatory landscape means for energy flexibility from EV batteries
