Uniper has signed an agreement to sell the Datteln 4 coal-fired power plant and associated heat generation facilities to ResInvest Group.

The 1,052MW hard coal-fired power station, which was commissioned in 2020, supplies electricity and district heating to households, as well as traction power to Deutsche Bahn.

According to a Uniper press release, the sale of this asset falls under conditions the energy company must fulfil under the 2022 stabilisation package approved by the EU Commission. The package paved the way for nationalisation, thereby preventing the financial collapse of the energy company.

Both parties have agreed not to disclose the agreed purchase price.

Holger Kreetz, Uniper chief operating officer, said: “The EU conditions make the sale of the Datteln 4 power plant necessary. The plant makes a significant contribution to energy supply – thanks above all to the highly professional and dedicated team that ensures operations with great passion. It is all the more gratifying that we have found a buyer in ResInvest Group a.s. who will continue to guarantee the safe and efficient operation of the plant. Upon completion of the transaction, ResInvest Group a.s. will not only take over a state-of-the-art power plant – but also a strong team."

ResInvest Group views the power plant as having long term value and therefore aligns with the asset manager's strategic investment plan. Tomáš Novotný, founder and chairman of ResInvest Group, commented in a statement: "We are committed to ensuring reliable operations today, while remaining ready to meet future energy needs".

According to Uniper, Datteln 4 is one of the ten largest combined heat and power plants in Germany and has a total efficiency of up to 60%. The site operates one of the world's largest rail frequency converter systems for Deutsche Bahn and any additional power generated is fed into the 50-Hz network owned by Amprion GmbH to supply the market.
