At Enlit Europe 2024 in Milan, with a dedicated booth and several sessions on nuclear technologies and the role of new nuclear, SNETP connected with stakeholders across industries, creating a foundation for future cross-sector collaborations within the energy field.

At the same time, the event coincided with a significant milestone in Europe’s nuclear innovation landscape: the announcement of the first batch of projects for the project working groups under the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

As a key partner in this initiative, SNETP participates in both the governing board and the secretariat alongside nucleareurope, contributing its knowledge and resources to support the effort.

This progress, along with our presence at Enlit Europe, signals Europe’s strong commitment to advancing innovative nuclear solutions and further emphasises the important role of nuclear energy in the ongoing energy transition.

As Europe’s energy landscape evolves, the need for stable, low carbon energy sources becomes increasingly critical. Nuclear energy, particularly innovative technologies like SMRs, offer a promising solution, supporting decarbonisation goals while enhancing grid stability.

The integration of nuclear with other renewable sources and cross-sector collaboration is essential to ensure a resilient, sustainable energy system that can meet Europe’s 2040 climate goals and ensure it can maintain its position in the global energy context.

Building connections and advancing technology at Enlit Europe

At Enlit Europe 2024, SNETP used its booth and sessions on nuclear technologies to connect with stakeholders from various sectors, highlighting the importance of nuclear energy in Europe’s shift towards cleaner power.

The booth provided an interactive platform for visitors to explore the latest advancements in the sector, as well as research on materials and safety protocols. Attendees also had the chance to take a quiz to test their knowledge of nuclear energy, while gaining insights into SNETP's objectives, activities and its extensive network of over 125 members.

During the three-day event, SNETP took part in several sessions on nuclear technologies, showcasing various Euratom projects, SNETP members and key actors within the industry. These sessions highlighted new developments in nuclear energy that are crucial for Europe’s transition to cleaner power sources.

Research and industry experts discussed technologies such as SMRs and Generation IV reactors, emphasising their flexibility and capacity to provide clean energy in diverse settings.

They explored the operational advantages of SMRs, which can be deployed in remote areas or seamlessly integrated into existing energy systems, as well as the enhanced safety features of Generation IV reactors, designed to reduce waste and improve sustainability.

Attendees gained valuable insights into how these technologies can work alongside renewable energy sources to tackle key challenges like grid stability. With the increasing use of intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar, it was emphasised how nuclear power can deliver reliable baseload energy, helping to create a balanced and resilient energy system.

Participants left with a better understanding of how these innovative nuclear solutions can enhance the overall energy landscape and support Europe’s ambitious climate objectives.

The European Industrial Alliance on SMRs

In the coming decade, Europe is set to make significant progress in the development of SMRs.

Known for their smaller physical footprint, flexibility and scalability, they promise to play a vital role in Europe’s future energy mix, providing decentralised, low carbon power to communities and industries alike.

In February 2024, the European Commission launched the European Industrial Alliance on SMRs, marking an important step in nuclear innovation in aiming to speed up the commercialisation of SMR technology.

After its first general assembly meeting in May and the official recognition of over 320 members, the Alliance announced in October the selection of an initial nine projects for the project working groups.

These PWGs will be one of the key engines in driving SMR technology forward in Europe, working on everything from reactor design and safety standards to deployment strategies and supply chain resilience.

The selection process underscores the Alliance’s commitment to equipping itself and positioning Europe as a leader in next-generation nuclear technology.

SNETP’s involvement reinforces its dedication to advancing nuclear solutions that align with the continent’s energy and climate objectives.

The coming months will be crucial as the Alliance rolls out its strategic action plan, which aims to meet its ambitious goal of accelerating the development and deployment of SMRs by the early 2030s.

SNETP’s portfolio of Euratom research projects

As part of the Enlit Europe Projects Zone, SNETP showcased a portfolio of over 30 Euratom projects funded by the European Commission, including OFFERR, NPHyCO, SASPAM-SA, iWeld, ENDURANCE and ALLEGRO.

These initiatives unite a community dedicated to advancing nuclear energy through robust safety measures, comprehensive security protocols and the responsible management of radioactive materials and waste.

They also prioritise innovation in new nuclear technologies such as SMRs and advanced reactor designs, which are essential for a sustainable energy future.

A session titled ‘Nuclear technologies’ featured representatives from these projects, who discussed their research and shared how they contribute to the nuclear energy landscape in Europe, especially regarding the role of SMRs in the energy transition.

To further promote the important work being done in these Euratom projects, SNETP is running an ongoing video campaign to raise awareness of their impact.

Looking ahead

A key takeaway from Enlit Europe and our continued involvement in the European Industrial Alliance on SMRs is the significance of collaboration and clear communication.

The success of integrating nuclear energy into Europe’s energy transition relies not only on technological advancements but also on fostering trust and partnerships across different sectors.

By engaging with stakeholders in renewables, grid management and other industries, we can identify synergies that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of nuclear integration.

Additionally, public acceptance remains crucial.
