Aggreko has finalised a PPA with Harmony Gold for the Eva Copper Mine Project in Northwest Queensland, paving the way for the development of Australia’s largest off-grid renewable hybrid power facility.

Aggreko, a Scotland-based provider of temporary power generation, temperature control, and energy services, announced the PPA with the international mining company, which has a minimum term of 15 years.

Aggreko will build, own and operate the renewable hybrid power facility, supplying safe, reliable and lower carbon energy to support the construction and operation of Harmony’s new copper mine.

The Eva Copper Mine Project renewable hybrid power facility will include a 104MVA thermal power facility with flexibility to scale, a 118MWp solar farm, and a 250MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

Once operational, the renewable hybrid power facility will give the Eva Copper Mine Project a reliable and scalable energy supply that optimises renewable use while ensuring consistent power for critical mining operations.

Once complete, Aggreko will own and operate what it says will be the largest off-grid renewable hybrid power facility and one of the most advanced in the country, cementing its position as a leading Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Australia’s resources sector.

The scale of this renewable hybrid power station and the level of integration between solar, battery storage and thermal generation set a new benchmark for off-grid energy.

Aggreko said it will also work alongside Harmony to further increase renewable energy distribution over time. This includes potential wind integration and future connection to transmission infrastructure, ensuring the power solution remains flexible and evolves with the project’s long-term requirements.

Aggreko AusPac Managing Director George Whyte said the announcement was a milestone for both the company and the country’s mining sector.

Said Whyte: “The scale of this renewable hybrid power station and the level of integration between solar, battery storage and thermal generation set a new benchmark for off-grid energy.  Our long-term agreement reflects Aggreko’s commitment to partnering with industry to deliver innovative, lower-emission energy solutions that are both commercially and operationally robust.”

Eva Copper Mine Project

Harmony Gold acquired 100% of the Eva Copper Project, an iron oxide-copper gold resource, together with 16 exploration tenements, in December 2022.

Following the completion of a feasibility study, a board decision was made in November 2025 to proceed with construction.

The project, located on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon People in Cloncurry, 75km north of the town centre and 95km northeast of Mount Isa in northwest Queensland, is poised to become the largest copper mine in northwest Queensland, Australia, according to Harmony Gold.

The project is expected to extend the company’s diversification into copper, which it calls a future-facing metal critical to the energy transition.

First production from the project is expected in the second half of 2028.

Since acquiring the project, Harmony identified opportunities to enhance the asset and its contribution to stakeholders. These include the use of renewable power and the implementation of an optimised design to potentially deliver greater production volumes.

The New South Wales government, citing data from a 2025 US Geological Survey, said that Australia has the third largest reserves of copper in the world and is the world’s eighth largest producer, containing 27 operating copper mines producing 780,000 tonnes in 2023.
