New combined-cycle power plant in Almaty will operate on hydrogen-ready gas turbines as part of significant technology and training pact.

New power plant will operate on hydrogen-ready gas turbines
Italian gas turbine OEM Ansaldo Energia has cemented a major technology and training deal with the government of Kazakhstan.
Ansaldo is to provide two of its AE94.2 gas turbines, plus two generators and all associated auxiliary services, for a new combined-cycle power plant in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s biggest city.
The gas-fired plant will operate on natural gas, however the Ansaldo turbines have been designed to also operate on a 40% hydrogen blend.
The deal was signed by Ansaldo’s executive vice-president of new units, Stefano Gianatti, its chief executive, Fabrizio Fabbri, and Adilbek Sergaliyev, CEO of KBI Energy Group, which will develop the plant.
The signing of the contract is part of a wider process of collaboration between the two countries.

In January, Fabbri and Kairat Maksutov, president of Kazakh state-owned electricity company Samruk Energy, signed a cooperation agreement to promote new combined-cycle power plant projects in Kazakhstan and initiate training of local experts by Ansaldo Energia.
Fabbri said he was “particularly pleased that the launch of Almaty project takes place simultaneously with the creation of a technological hub for training and skills exchange, which will help consolidate our relationships with Kazakhstan in the years to come”.
