Mr Raymond Zheng, President and Co-Founder of LAISON, writes to global partners about expectations for the water metering market in Africa in 2023.

LAISON Annual Letter to Global Partners
Dear LAISON Global Clients and Partners,
First of all, thank you for always supporting Hangzhou LAISON Technology Co. Ltd., the past 2022 is the 10th Year of LAISON, though the global economy and our life have suffered from many different challenges, the company still has the stable performance in smart water metering field, and now LAISON is the leading smart water meter solution provider through continuous efforts, with annually more than 20 million USD contract from overseas countries only.
Because of the unexpected Russia- Ukraine war started in Feb. 2022, and Federal Reserve (FED) rose the interest 6 times to 4.25%-4.5%, the global economy is suffering from the energy crisis, inflation, and currency devaluation, especially in developing countries. So LAISON has thought more about how to stand by with water companies on operation in 2022, such as improving the efficiency of meter reading, billing and also infrastructure maintenance through IT system innovation. On the other side, LAISON also shares the experience of PPP (Public Private Partnership) applications in water distribution and metering with water companies, and partners with European and Chinese institutes to provide the financing solution for African water companies.
Nowadays, Chinese experience in innovation and digitization has encouraged many developing countries. Most water companies have realized how to utilize technology to improve customer service. LAISON has been aware that more than 25 African countries’ water service providers have started learning on the Mobile Payment System, Remote Meter Reading and STS (Standard Transfer System according to IEC62055-41, 51) Prepaid water meters, these combination comes to the standard solution for many water companies, and the countries like South Africa, Egypt, Angola, Tanzania are planning to change metering devices throughout countries to smart prepaid water meters, because the conventional mechanical water meters have many faults like inaccuracy, increasing the NRW rate and making corruptions.
For the purpose of better satisfying the water companies’ requests, in 2022 LAISON focuses on developing the Ultrasonic smart water meter, and also the GPRS STS prepaid water meters with two-way communication as AMI smart meter, the Bluetooth STS prepaid water meters with competitive cost, since it using Smart phone App instead of the Customer Interface Unit (CIU). Till today, LAISON is the only smart water meter manufacturer that has the complete smart prepaid meter series with different metering technologies like Ultrasonic, Volumetric and Multi-jet, and also communication technologies including LoRa/LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, GPRS, Bluetooth and Infrared, etc.
Moreover, LAISON has participated in a few projects with enormous influence in 2022, such as Egypt Holding Company for water & waste water One (1) million pcs smart water meter project, Angola Electricity and Water Ministry 160,000pcs smart water meter project, Ghana Water company 100,000pcs smart water meter project, Nigeria FCT Water board PPP projects, etc., which shows the trend of the smart metering projects comes to 2nd decade, which means expanding from the pilot projects with a few thousand meters to one hundred thousand level or even million level. LAISON is the company with such capacity to execute these projects.
Since the demand increased sharply, more and more water companies like NWSC, Uganda prefer to have the local assembly for smart water meters, LAISON has already supported local partners in South Africa and established assembly factories, with the experience of Standardization Workshop in China, with sharing all equipment, technology, and know-how such as drawings, also supplying the smart meter components. Looking for Global partners to boom local manufacturing is also an important task of LAISON in 2023.
Finally, may you and your families have a peaceful, healthy 2023, life always has hope because of beliefs!
Sincerely yours
Mr. Raymond Zheng
