Polish energy company Polenergia has announced that construction work on the onshore infrastructure for Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms has begun.

While the offshore part of the work will only begin in 2026, building has started on two onshore power stations, cable routes connecting the coast with the energy infrastructure and a service base in Łeba.

The two onshore power stations are being built in Pęplin near Ustka by Hitachi Energy, with Polish company Erbud acting as subcontractor for the construction work.

In Łeba, Erbud has started building the operational and service base that will provide services for offshore wind farms. The facility is expected to be completed in the middle of 2026.

The construction of power cable routes is also underway, which will measure about 14km. Enprom and Tele-Fonika Kable have been selected to produce the cables and prepare cable routes.

Horizontal directional drilling is also currently being carried out near Ustka to allow cables to be laid underground without the need for open excavation.

Dominika Kulczyk, chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Polenergia SA, commented: "Today, we are implementing the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 projects, which are a symbol of a new era for the national energy sector...Our farms are an impulse for the development of Polish industry and a great potential for the development of domestic companies.

According to Kulczyk, installation work at sea will begin in the first half of next year. The company expects the first electricity from the 1440MW Bałtyk 2 and 3 will flow in 2027, with full commercialisation expected in 2028.

This year, the Polish research company MEWO inspected the seabed for unexploded and dud ordnance and work will soon begin on removing submarine boulders from the future route of export cables.

The Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms are being developed by Polenergia and Equinor. The partners are also in the process of preparing the 1560MW Bałtyk 1 farm to participate in the offshore auction scheduled for December this year. To this end, a pre-qualification application has been submitted to the Energy Regulatory Office.

Continued Kulczyk: "...For an effective energy transformation, it is also necessary to resolve the offshore auction in 2025. We have the Bałtyk 1 project fully prepared for it, which, as the largest and most advanced phase II farm, can play a key role in maintaining the pace of the green transformation and building a strong domestic industrial base for the offshore sector."

Bałtyk 1 has secured a connection agreement with the transmission system operator PSE with the final investment decision planned for 2027.

In total, the three Bałtyk projects can supply over 4 million households in Poland.
