DEWA’s solar-powered data centre inaugurated

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) digital subsidiary Data Hub Integrated Solutions’ green data centre has been recognised as the world’s largest of its type by the Guinness World Records.

The data centre at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park about 50km southeast of Dubai, likewise the world’s largest single-site solar park, combines digital and energy technologies to drive DEWA’s and the UAE’s digital transformation as well as to host customers nationally and globally striving to achieve net zero commitments.

The 100% renewable powered centre extends over an area of 16,000m2 and has a capacity exceeding 100MW.

The centre features digital solutions from Dell Technologies, Microsoft and Huawei including the latest advances in Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, digital twin technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), cyber recovery as a service, consulting and professional services, managed services, residency services, network as a service and open cloud among others.

“The development of the world’s largest solar-powered data centre was guided by the vision for advancing sustainable development,” said DEWA managing director and CEO, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.

“With a world-class low carbon information technology infrastructure powered by solar energy, the data centre supports the goal of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050 to generate 100% of its energy production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050.”

Data Hub Integrated Solutions or Moro Hub is a subsidiary of DEWA’s digital arm, Digital DEWA.

Other partners with whom agreements were signed at the opening include the Digital Dubai Authority which is leading Dubai’s digitalisation effort, cloud service provider VMWare and the banks Emirates NBD and Dubai Islamic Bank.

The centre is envisaged to set a new standard in terms of energy efficiency and the use of green technologies and is set to be a showcase during this year’s COP 28 meeting in Dubai in December.
