Digitalisation and AI in Europe’s energy sector open for consultation

The European Commission’s planned roadmap for digitalisation and AI in the energy sector is open for consultation and input on a ‘call for evidence’.

The intent of the roadmap, which was foreseen in the affordable energy action plan, is to accelerate the use of digitalisation and AI in the sector, while mitigating the associated challenges and risks.

By providing an coordination framework, with seamless access to energy data through the common energy data space, the roadmap is expected to unlock an EU market for innovative energy services such as demand side flexibility and bidirectional charging of electric vehicles, support energy companies in developing AI models and test and experimentation facilities and support consumers and buildings in becoming more energy efficient.

Other aims suggested are to stimulate innovative digital and AI solutions for the evolving energy system, sustainably integrate the rising data centre energy demand into the system by improving long term planning, and enhance transparency and risk oversight by sharing information and best practices as well as incidents and near misses in the use of AI solutions.

It also is planned to establish a coordination and governance framework through collaboration between governments, industry, civil society and research institutions in order to maximise the benefits of digital and AI technologies for the energy sector.

The survey, which is aimed to inform the roadmap alongside the call for evidence, is comprised of 25 questions broadly focussed on the main barriers and needs and priorities in each of these five main objectives.

Both the call for evidence and consultation survey are open until 5 November 2025, alongside a number of targeted stakeholder consultations, with publication of the roadmap planned for Q1 of 2026.

The digitalisation and AI roadmap forms the next step in a programme of actions and legislation from the Commission.

These include the energy sector digitalisation and grids action plans and more generally the AI Act and AI continent action plan.

With its intent to identify levers across policy areas, the roadmap will be complementary to the ETIP SNET position paper on AI and GenAI in Europe’s smart grids that was published following wide consultation in April 2025.
