EU Energy Projects Podcast: How INSIEME is building the Common European Energy Data Space
INSIEME is addressing one of the biggest challenges facing the energy sector today: data fragmentation.

In the latest episode of the EU Projects Podcast, we sit down with Georg Hartner, representative of INSIEME, an ambitious Digital Europe action under the custody of DG Connect. The project’s mission is both visionary and deeply practical: to establish and deploy a common European energy data space by the sector, for the sector.
At its core, INSIEME brings together an impressive alliance; 54 key European partners including TSOs, DSOs, solution providers, flexibility service providers, market platforms, and leading digital innovators from across the continent. The project runs from April 2025 until 2028.
“Many actors in our sector are struggling with data integration,” explains Hartner. “It’s one of their biggest cost drivers. They can build a solution for one member state, but scaling it to others becomes prohibitively expensive.” The Common European Energy Data Space, he adds, aims to change that, making data integration “a matter of minutes", boosting innovation and scalability across Europe.
But INSIEME is more than a project. As Hartner notes, “We’ve turned from being a project into a movement.” Indeed, the name INSIEME - Italian for together - perfectly captures the spirit of collaboration driving the initiative. Coordinating such a large and diverse consortium across 16 countries is no small feat, but this shared mission has created a unique sense of momentum.
The project’s pilots tackle some of Europe’s twin transition priorities, from energy efficiency and grid flexibility to renewable integration and electromobility. Concrete examples include interoperable energy sharing models and smart grid solutions enabling better communication between producers and operators. And innovations that promise to unlock Europe’s full renewable potential.
Ultimately, INSIEME embodies what Europe does best: building common solutions for shared challenges. By making energy data accessible, interoperable and actionable, the project is laying the groundwork for a smarter, greener and more connected European energy future.
