What is it like to be an IPP operating in a landscape of unprecedented complexity?

“It’s plain vanilla challenges,” says Javier Vaquerizo, ContourGlobal’s Chief Commercial Officer, with a laugh—before quickly getting to the real point.

The truth, he explains, is that the landscape is in constant flux.

Speaking at Enlit Europe in Bilbao, Vaquerizo described how independent power producers are being forced to become more agile than ever, responding to rapid technological change, shifting regulation, evolving investor expectations and increasingly sophisticated power markets.

These dynamics, he says, were the catalyst behind ContourGlobal’s recent rebrand—a strategic pivot designed to reshape the company fundamentally.

“We are shifting from a heavily contracted portfolio with a classic management approach to a sophisticated, merchant-exposed, risk-management-focused IPP.”

To support that transition, ContourGlobal is implementing new capabilities to strengthen its hedging activities, while accelerating the shift towards a more renewables-focused portfolio.

This is being complemented by flexibility assets such as storage, alongside greater participation in hybrid PPAs that enhance risk protection for battery and hybrid investments.

“It’s about adapting to new market rules, new grid codes and much faster-moving markets,” Vaquerizo says.

At its core, the rebrand is about risk management, and Vaquerizo highlights three key risks the company is prioritising.

The first is access to capital, at a time when risk profiles across the sector are changing. The second is operating in increasingly granular markets, including 15-minute trading intervals and the digital control of assets such as batteries. The third is organisational; maintaining a cohesive workforce that fully embraces the company’s evolving culture and vision.

“I’ve lived through rebrands in my professional life, and once you get past the initial shock—like having to change all your PowerPoint templates—you realise it’s about far more than an image, a colour or a name,” he says.

"ContourGlobal is changing its strategy, its culture and its business model.”

Vaquerizo believes this change is crucial to future-proof the business in an energy landscape that is changing fast.

“We need to understand that we are no longer going to be as secure as a regulated business. We have to embrace that reality and accept that we are part of a liberalised energy value chain.”

“The real opportunity,” he adds, “is recognising this shift and preparing the company with the right capabilities to succeed in this new environment.”
