India adds a record 24.5GW of solar power capacity in 2024
This is according to the latest report released by JMK Research and Analytics| which showed circa 3.4GW of wind capacity was also added in 2024.

In 2024, India added about 24.5GW of solar capacity, the highest recorded capacity compared to any previous year.
This is according to the latest report released by JMK Research and Analytics, which showed circa 3.4GW of wind capacity was also added in 2024, a nearly 1.21 times increase in wind installations compared to 2023.
The report states that with these additions, India’s total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity reached 209.44GW as of December 2024.
Solar energy accounts for approximately 47% of the total RE segment, making it the most significant contributor among renewable sources.

Key findings of the report include:
- India added about 18.5GW of new utility-scale solar capacity in 2024, marking an increase of ~2.8 times compared to the installations in 2023. In 2024, Rajasthan leads with 7.09GW capacity, followed by Gujarat with 4.32GW and Tamil Nadu with 1.73GW. These top 3 states account for 71% of India’s total solar utility-scale solar installation.
- In terms of rooftop solar, India added about 4.59GW of new capacity in 2024, a 53% increase compared to 2023. This growth can be attributed to the launch of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme. Notably, within just 10 months of the scheme’s launch, there have been 7 lakh (hundred thousand) rooftop solar installations across the country.
- In the off-grid/distributed solar segment, about 1.48GW was added in 2024, which is about 197% higher than the installations in the same period last year.
- In the wind sector, about 3.4GW of new capacity was added in 2024, up 21% compared to 2023. Gujarat (1250MW), Karnataka (1135MW), and Tamil Nadu (980MW) accounted for about 98% of the new wind capacity added in 2024.
