Siemens Energy has signed an agreement to supply six F-class gas turbines, six generators and 20-year long-term service agreements for two combined-cycle power plants in Oman.

The Misfah and Duqm projects will increase the country’s electricity capacity by 2.6GW, with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company serving as the offtaker for the electricity generated.

The projects are being developed by a consortium comprising Etihad Water and Electricity Company PJSC, Nebras Power Investment Management, Bahwan Infrastructure Services, and Korea Western Power.

Doosan Enerbility, together with SEPCO-3, is responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of the plants.

Strategic locations

The power plans have been strategically placed in locations with growing electricity demand.

Misfah is located within the Muscat Governorate, which is one of the Sultanate’s largest electricity demand centres.

The Duqm project is situated inside the Special Economic Zone at Duqm in Al Wusta Governorate, an industrial and logistics hub on the Arabian Sea coast.

Karim Amin, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy, emphasised the need for reliable and flexible power in the region to ensure grid stability while also allowing for more renewables to be integrated in the system.

He said: “We are proud to support this journey, and build on a strong legacy in Oman, by providing our cutting-edge gas turbines, expertise, and service capabilities to the flagship Misfah and Duqm power plants to deliver highly efficient energy and add a significant 2.6GW to Oman’s power system.”

The SGT5-4000F gas turbines will be manufactured in Berlin, while the SGen5-2000P generators will be manufactured in Muelheim.

Hydrogen-ready gas turbines

H.E. Salim Al Aufi, Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, visited the gas turbine factory in Berlin, where he highlighted the importance of Siemens Energy’s hydrogen-ready technology.

“By deploying advanced gas turbines with hydrogen co-firing capabilities, we are strengthening the reliability of electricity supply while supporting our long-term strategy to diversify the Sultanate's energy mix.

“This will help create the flexibility to increase the use of hydrogen over time as our energy transition progresses.”

According to Siemens Energy, the SGT5-4000F combustion system is able to handle different fuel compositions, e.g. natural gas with high contents on hydrogen (up to 30 vol%), propane, ethylene and butane, as well as inert gases.

Furthermore, the SGT5-4000F combustion system is able to run on fuels with higher amounts of impurities, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) of up to 4000 ppm.

The fuel system is able to switch quickly between fuel gas and fuel oil and vice versa.
